Two men arrested inside an Alamo H-E-B face charges related to evading and resisting arrest after a local traffic pursuit reached the store, Telemundo 40 reported. According to Alamo police’s account carried by the station, two ICE agents conducting unrelated surveillance in the parking lot stepped in to assist.
The department said an officer tried to stop a vehicle that was being driven recklessly. The driver stopped in the supermarket parking lot, and both occupants got out and ran inside. The two ICE agents saw the patrol car’s emergency lights and the foot pursuit and intervened to help, according to the police account. The department said ICE neither initiated nor participated in the traffic stop and that there was no joint operation between the agencies.
Telemundo identified the men as Emmanuel Pacheco Hernández and José Ramón Librado Ortega, and described Librado Ortega as the vehicle’s passenger. Both appeared before a judge Monday, and each received a $20,000 bond, the station reported. The reported charges are allegations, not findings of guilt.
Videos of the arrests circulated widely online. Chron described footage showing several agents and an Alamo police officer apprehending a man in a store aisle and handcuffing him face down on the floor. The videos prompted debate over immigration enforcement in public places, including H-E-B’s response and the role of its employees, Chron reported.
In statements to MySA and Chron, H-E-B said the pursuit began off its property. The company said it had no prior knowledge of the incident, was not involved in the arrests, and is not working with agencies to conduct enforcement operations at its stores. “No H-E-B Partners or customers were injured during the incident,” the company told MySA. H-E-B separately told Chron the incident did not involve anyone shopping inside the store.
The sources reviewed do not establish either man’s immigration status or whether either faces immigration proceedings.
